TWST: Last time we spoke, biofuels was the alternative energy segment that you were most interested in. What has happened in that sector since we last spoke, and what is your current outlook?
Mr. Molchanov: The year 2013, in the realm of advanced or second-generation biofuels, is certainly the most active year of news flow to date. There are a lot of things happening in the industry. Many companies are entering commercial production, or are very close to it, and so the industry is on the cusp of achieving scale for the first time ever.
That being said, of course, the fact of the matter is there are growing pains whenever a new industry gets into commercial production. There are inevitable delays along the way, some operational glitches that have to be resolved. That's perfectly normal.
For public companies, in the context of an unforgiving market, that can be a source of frustration in many cases, but there is no question that in 2013, and again in 2014, there will be many more companies entering commercial production than has been the case historically.
So for example, if we just focus on the companies that are currently publicly traded, several important milestones come to mind. Gevo (GEVO), which is producing isobutanol from corn, just started its first commercial plant in June of this year. KiOR (KIOR), which is producing gasoline and diesel from wood chips, started its first commercial plant in March and is currently in the production ramp-up process.
Solazyme (SZYM), which is producing a range of products via an algae technology platform, is in limited production currently, but its first major plant is set to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year. And Amyris (AMRS) has been producing at its first...
