Every year, Black Friday is a day that people look forward to sales and the experience of buying clothes or household items in bulk. Businesses in Randolph County open their doors for new or familiar faces to shop for items at a lower price.
But how did Black Friday become so popular? Here are some interesting facts about the discount day.
The phrase was first created in 1869 to describe the financial crisis after the country’s gold market crashed.
The first Black Friday goes back to the 1950s in Philadelphia.
Black Friday hit a new record of $9 billion in 2020.
States that had higher COVID restrictions on family gatherings last year saw higher growth in online shopping.
Whether residents want to shop in-person or online this year, businesses such as Nella’s Boutique located at 30 S. Church Street, Unit 1B in Asheboro will be open.
Gina McKee, the advertising and marketing manager, believes Black Friday stirs up holiday shopping excitement. A day for people to get a jumpstart on their holiday gift needs.
McKee hopes to see many customers out in downtown Asheboro, spending their hard-earned dollars locally. This year will mark the boutique’s fifth anniversary since opening its doors and they have been grateful for the local support.
On Black Friday, the boutique always gives goody bags at the door for their first 25 customers. They will also feature all-day sales throughout the store — some items to anticipate include curated gifts, clothes, shoes and accessories.
“It's a great day to shop local! We also just open at our regular 10 a.m., so you can sleep in and not have to beat the door down in the middle of the night,” McKee said. “You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook or download our free shopping app to get the latest updates on all our exciting Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales and deals.”
