Guests will be Requested to Use Paper Straws Instead of Plastic Straws

Royal Caribbean's ships have begun implementing a 'Straws Upon Request' policy in 2017. That program will be taken a step further by the start of 2019, when guests will be requested to use a paper straw instead of a plastic one. Guests will also begin seeing Forrest Stewardship Council-certified wood coffee stirrers and bamboo garnish picks as part of Royal Caribbean's plastic reduction strategy. The Company's next efforts will focus on other single-use plastics such as condiment packets, cups, and bags. A full plastics audit is underway, with the overall plan to be completed in phases by 2020.

Eliminating Single-Use Plastics is Another Step in 'Save the Waves' Program

Commenting on the announcement, Richard Fain, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Royal Caribbean, stated that healthy oceans are vital to the success of the Company. Fain added that for over 25 years, Royal Caribbean's 'Save the Waves' program has guided it to reduce, reuse, and recycle everything it can. Eliminating single-use plastics is another step in that program.

Royal Caribbean's 'Save the Waves' Program

Since 1992, Royal Caribbean's 'Save the Waves' program has brought best sustainability practices to the Company's ships. The program introduced state-of-the-art recycling centers onboard ships, which are equipped with shredders, balers, and compactors, as well as crushers for glass, light bulbs, tin, and aluminum. Their goal is 'zero landfill' that is all waste is reused, recycled, or incinerated. The Company already does that for its ships that operate in ports with appropriate facilities. For the rest, the average waste-to-landfill has been reduced to less than 0.5 pounds per day per person - less than 1/8 of the US average.

Royal Caribbean and the Environment

Royal Caribbean has a history of ocean conservation and environmental stewardship. In addition to the 'Save the Waves' program, other initiatives include placement of an environmental officer on every ship beginning in 1996; the installation of state-of-the-art wastewater treatment systems on its ships; and the waste reduction initiatives, which have evolved to repurpose 100% of the offloaded waste from the ships when they end cruises in Florida ports. As part of the Company's destination stewardship program, it also aligned with non-governmental and governmental organizations to form the Sustainable Destinations Alliance for the Americas, with the intention of helping the destinations in that region remain healthy and vibrant for years to come.
