Board game and tabletop game destination Game Chest is moving again this summer.
But Marvel, Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop fans need not panic. The store will find a new home. This time, store customers can help choose the next location.
Game Chest is located at 409 S. Second Ave in downtown Sioux Falls. On the store's blog, owners Amanda (Manda) and Ben Wermers stated on Sunday that the building the store is located in was sold and will be demolished by the end of the year.
The store has been in its location for sales and community game events for more than two years, and the owners plan to move out by July.
“The best laid plans can’t always be resolved the way we anticipate,” the Wermers said in the post, stating that they hoped to stay the length of their five-year lease.
"We loved it. It had potential," Amanda Wermers told the Argus Leader.
Moving several times, facing COVID-19 slowing down their in-person business and downtown construction have all taken a hit to the business.
The Second Avenue location was a larger store with parking space, an upgrade compared to its prior location.
“When we moved to our current location in October of 2019 no one knew what the future would hold (truly) but we did know that we wanted to stay in this location as long as we could, maybe expand and even buy the building one day,” the post read.
The store owners have grown their reputation and store in recent years. They outgrew their Jones 421 building location shortly after their initial opening in 2018 to great success. That happened after the initial success with their pop-up shop in 2017.
After finding a storefront home in a larger downtown location, the owners stated that the land behind their store sold to Lloyd Companies for demolition and for a new mixed-use building, so they plan to leave and - even watch a demolition party of the old spot.
Game Chest wants to know where you want the store
"We want to stay central to the downtown area," Wermers said. "Most of our community is scattered, but like the downtown aspect of having things to do when they visit us."
Wermers also stated that the new store will hopefully have a store area, free tables and rentable rooms for Dungeons & Dragons, Pokemon and birthday party events.
“We started in downtown because we love the energy of this area, but we didn’t know you all at the time,” the post said. “Therefore, we would love for you to participate in our very brief survey to let us know what you think.”
Though a community survey isn’t the final determiner of the future location, the Wermers stated that they want to do their best to find a location the gaming community wants. The post on their site also mentions “possible crowdfunding” for the future location.
