Boeing Scheduled a Round of Layoffs for May

plans to lay off a number of its factory workers in May.

The aircraft manufacturer issued a federally-mandated notice to employees of its Washington state commercial jet factories. A Boeing spokesperson confirmed the 60-day notice, according to CNN Money, but declined to state when exactly the layoffs would occur.

The staff cuts are involuntary, according to CNN, though the company’s other recent layoffs have mostly come in the form of buyouts. Earlier in March, the company accepted around 1,800 voluntary layoffs from its union machinists and engineers in the Seattle area.

Boeing has been reducing its staff since early 2016 due to a decline in demand for its twin-aisle jets. The upcoming layoffs in May will affect no more than 500 people, CNN reports.
