Boston College loses QB Anthony Brown to season-ending injury
It’s been a pretty positive year for Boston College, and redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Brown has played a big part in that.
Unfortunately, Brown won’t play a role moving forward. Eagles coach Steve Addazio announced Monday that Brown will miss the rest of the season after suffering a leg injury in the 17-14 loss to NC State on Saturday.
“We’ve lost Anthony Brown for the season. Anthony has a lower leg injury that will require surgery, so we’ll be moving forward,” Addazio said. “Obviously our heart goes out to Anthony. He’s a big part of the future of our program, and he’s a great competitor. He’ll be back and ready to roll next year.”
Brown was injured in the second quarter Saturday against the Wolfpack. After the injury, senior Darius Wade, who lost the quarterback competition to Brown in preseason practice, came in at QB and the offense struggled against the stellar Wolfpack defense.
After the defense forced a fumble, BC took a 14-10 lead late in the third quarter, but the Wolfpack went back in front 17-14 on a 50-yard touchdown run by Nyheim Hines. The Eagles regained possession three more times after falling behind, but could not tie the game or go in front. A game-tying field goal try with 4:15 mark went awry thanks to a bad snap.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Eagles, who dropped to 5-5. BC, after a 1-3 start, had won four of five entering Saturday’s game behind a resurgent offense (the team averaged 40 ppg during the 3-game winning streak). Offense has been hard to come by during Addazio’s tenure, but Brown has shown promise and true freshman running back A.J. Dillon (1,039 yards, 8 TDs) has been excellent, giving hope for the program’s future after Addazio entered the season on the hot seat.
With Brown sidelined, Wade is expected to start moving forward, but Addazio said true freshman E.J. Perry, who has been redshirting, will also be available if needed. Receiver Jeff Smith, who started three games at QB in 2015, will also receive reps at quarterback in practice this week, Addazio said.
BC returns to action on Saturday against UConn at Fenway Park before rounding out the ACC schedule at Syracuse.
