Boston TV station apologizes for Aaron Hernandez tweet

In the minutes after the New England Patriots sealed their AFC title game win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, local Boston station WCVB posted a tweet promoting a story on the victory.

At first glance, everything looked kosher. The facts were correct, everything was spelled right and there was even a photo featuring a Jaguars and Patriots player diving for a ball.

Yeah, about that photo …

The Patriots player pictured is none other than convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez, who killed himself in his prison cell last April.

Sunday was almost five years to the date that Hernandez last donned a Patriots uniform, but the picture in question is from a 2011 preseason game. You can tell by the patch on Hernandez’s jersey honoring the late Myra Kraft.

As the internet is wont to do, several people responded to the tweet with off-color jokes. The news station responded just over an hour later explaining what happened before deleting the original tweet.

Mistakes happen, of course.

Some just stick out more than others.
