Bouwmeester okay and Boudreau gone in Minny

Michael Finewax

The Minnesota Wild fired their head coach Bruce Boudreau Friday morning and replaced him with interim coach Dean Evason.

The Wild missed the playoffs last season and at 27-23-7 this season, were tied for 10th in the Western Conference standings and out of the playoff picture. It has been a great regular season career for Boudreau who was 567-302-115, but he never had a lot of success in the playoffs and was never in a Stanley Cup Final despite having very good teams in Washington and Anaheim.

It may be the end of the road for Boudreau as he is 65 and teams are looking for younger coaches, not anyone who can collect Social Security.

Notes

The Ducks training and medical staff were amazing Tuesday when Jay Bouwmeester had a cardiac episode on the St. Louis bench. Along with the Blues training staff, they saved Bouwmeester’s life, needing to use the defibrillator to revive the defenseman. The Ducks play four times this week and this may be the final week of Ryan Miller’s career with Anaheim as the trade deadline is Monday February 24 and some teams could use an experienced backup. Miller and John Gibson (who is not having a good fantasy season at 16-22-4 with a 3.04 GAA and a .902 save percentage) could share the goaltending duties this week. The Ducks have sent Josh Mahura and Brendan Guhle to the minores. Ondrej Kase, who could be on the trade block as well, has missed the last three games with an illness. If he is traded, Kase could be worth a pickup in some fantasy leagues.

Notes

The Coyotes play three games in four nights as part of their four-game week. Darcy Kuemper suffered a setback this week as he is trying to return from a lower-body injury suffered on December 19. Antti Raanta should get three starts in net with Adin Hill picking up one. The Coyotes recalled their fifth overall pick in 2018, Barrett Hayton, from the minors. A hero at the World Junior Championships last month for Canada, Hayton was on a conditioning stint in the minors and had a goal and five points in five AHL games. Jakob Chychrun saw his five-game points streak come to an end in Ottawa Thursday. The talented blueliner has a career high 12 goals and 24 points in 60 games this season. This is the fourth NHL season for Chychrun, despite being only 21 and he has played in every game in 2019-20 after missing 59 contests over the last two seasons due to injuries. He is a keeper.

Notes

The Bruins play three games in four nights as they make their annual trip to Western Canada. Tuukka Rask should get two starts with Jaroslav Halak picking up the slack once. David Pastrnak regained the NHL goal-scoring lead on Wednesday with a hat trick. The winger has 41 goals, one better than Alex Ovechkin and Auston Matthews heading into action Thursday (Matthews scored his 41st Thursday while Ovechkin was once again held off the scoresheet). He is having an outstanding season as he also has 40 assists in 58 games, good for third place in the NHL points race. With Pastrnak playing so well, Brad Marchand has been a bit under the radar this season but the tough winger has 23 goals and 71 points with 68 penalty minutes in 58 contests. Jeremy Lauzon completed his two-game suspension for his hit on Arizona’s Derek Stepan and the defenseman was promptly sent to the minors.

Notes

Rookie Victor Olofsson returned to action Thursday after missing six weeks with a lower-body injury and promptly scored twice, including the winner, to give him 18 goals and 37 points in 43 games. He is seeing plenty of action on the top line with Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart and should get plenty of Calder consideration if he stays healthy the rest of the way. Zach Bogosian requested a trade back on December 12 and has been a healthy scratch in every game since January 18. Jeff Skinner is in a career-high drought as he has not found the back of the net in his last 20 games. Skinner has not scored since December 2 and has only 11 goals in 48 games, after a career-high 40 goals last season. Carter Hutton started off the season with six straight wins, went 0-8-4 after that, and has won four of his last five starts.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. Anaheim, vs. Boston, @ Detroit

Rested: vs. Anaheim (Monday)

Notes

The Flames received outstanding goaltending from Cam Talbot Thursday as he stopped 44 shots for his first shutout of the season. He has provided Calgary with good backup goaltending as he is 8-8-1 with a 2.57 GAA and a .924 save percentage. Starter David Rittich is 22-15-5 with a 2.87 GAA and a .910 save percentage so don’t be surprised if Talbot sees more ice time down the stretch. Sam Bennett returned to the lineup Thursday after missing a couple of games with an illness. The former fourth overall pick could be on the trading block as many teams value his services and the Flames could use a boost elsewhere. Milan Lucic has been hot of late with two goals and five points in four games over the last week. He has only six goals and 16 points in 57 games but has been just as valuable of late, as the player he was traded from Edmonton for, James Neal.

Notes

The Hurricanes are in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division, the best in the NHL, but trail Columbus and Philadelphia (the two wild cards) by only four points, with two games in hand. Sebastian Aho set a career high in goals Tuesday, with his 31st. He has a six-game goals streak on the line Friday versus the New Jersey Devils. Martin Necas looks like he is here to stay as the 21-year-old rookie has 14 goals and 29 points. Necas was taken 12th overall in 2017 and has three goals in his last seven games. Ryan Dzingel was the Hurricanes big unrestricted free-agent signing in the off-season, but he has been a disappointment offensively with only eight goals and 29 points this season. Andrei Svechnikov has a career-high 22 goals and 52 points in only 56 games. The sophomore winger is a stud in the NHL and only going to get better as he is just 19 years of age.

Notes

The Blackhawks were not pleased with the play of Dylan Strome of late as he was a healthy scratch Tuesday, but was returned to the lineup Wednesday. The center has only 10 goals and 30 points this season and has been held off the scoresheet in his last six games played, going back to January 7. He missed seven games with an ankle sprain in January but the coaching staff thought that sitting him would make him realize that he has ‘more to give’ according to the coaching staff. Patrick Kane has 25 goals and 67 points in 57 games thus far and is close to the pace for a 100-point season. Brandon Saad has 17 goals in 45 games.

COLORADO

Notes

The Avalanche play four games this week including three times in four nights. Philipp Grubauer should get three starts with Pavel Francouz getting the call in net once. Andre Burakovsky has moved into second place in Avs scoring, with 43 points as he has five goals and 15 points in his last 10 games. Nazem Kadri will be out four-six weeks with a lower-body injury suffered Sunday in Minnesota. Valeri Nichushkin continues to impress and the former Dallas Star, potted his first power play goal of the season Tuesday in a win over Ottawa. He has 11 goals and 23 points in 50 games. Cale Makar had his four-game points streak end Tuesday. He is still the favorite for the Calder Trophy but has some competition in the form of Quinn Hughes, Victor Olofsson and Ilya Samsonov.

COLUMBUS

Notes

The Blue Jackets play the Philadelphia Flyers in a home-and-home series. If there is any rough stuff, look for Nick Foligno to be involved. The Blue Jackets have recalled their first-round pick from 2018, Liam Foudy, on an emergency basis in each of the last two games. Foudy has been with London of the OHL this season and picked up his first career NHL point Thursday with an assist. The Blue Jackets received horrible news when Seth Jones suffered a broken ankle that required surgery. He will be out eight-10 weeks. Cam Atkinson is out two-three weeks with an ankle sprain. He missed four weeks in mid-December with an ankle sprain as well. Elvis Merzlikins was named the first star of the week as he was 2-1-0 with a 0.67 GAA and a .971 save percentage.

Notes

The Stars are firmly entrenched in the playoffs as they are third in the Central, but they are only three points out of first place. Tyler Seguin scored on the power play Thursday and it was his first goal in 18 games. The Stars are missing Joe Pavelski (upper body) and Alexander Radulov (undisclosed) from the lineup with Radulov being placed on the injured reserve list. The Stars recalled Jason Robertson from the minors and the second-round pick from 2017 made his NHL debut Thursday against Toronto. He picked up an assist in 12:18 of action. Denis Gurianov has goals in four of his last five games and has 17 this season, one behind team leader Jamie Benn. Corey Perry has lost his offensive flair as he has only four goals and 16 points in 45 games but he leads the Stars with 60 penalty minutes.

Notes

The Red Wings became the first team in the NHL to lose 40 games this week. Andreas Athanasiou has an NHL-worst minus-42 in 42 games. The first five minus players are all Red Wings as Valtteri Filppula, Filip Hronek, Mike Green and Robby Fabbri are all minus-27 or worse. Anthony Mantha returned to the Detroit lineup Tuesday after missing almost eight weeks with a middle-body injury. He chipped in with a pair of assists Tuesday, providing Detroit with some much-needed offense. He has 27 points including 12 goals, in 31 games.  Frans Nielsen also returned on Tuesday, He has had a poor offensive season with only three goals and seven points in 48 contests. Jonathan Bernier continues to excel on a poor Detroit team. The Red Wings are 14-41-4 but Bernier is 12-16-2 while Jimmy Howard is 2-21-2.

Notes

The Oilers will be without Connor McDavid for another week or two, after he suffered a quad injury on February 8. He has been caught for second place in NHL scoring by David Pastrnak as both have 81 points, trailing Leon Draisaitl by nine points. James Neal has been placed on injured reserve with a foot injury that occurred on January 30. The Oilers recalled Tyler Benson from the minors to take Neal’s place on the roster. Kailer Yamamoto has nine points in his last nine games and has fit in quite well with Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on what is now the Oilers top unit. The Oilers have split the starts between Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen with Smith playing a lot more of late. He is 15-10-4 with a 2.93 GAA and a .904 save percentage while Koskinen’s splits are 15-11-2/2.91/.909.

Notes

The Panthers play four games out West this week with three coming in four nights. Sergei Bobrovsky should get the call three times with Sam Montembeault getting one start. Bobrovsky continues to struggle this season and was pulled from Thursday’s start after giving up three goals on nine shots to the Flyers. He is 20-17-5 with a 3.32 GAA and a .896 save percentage. If you took him in your pool and still have him, chances are great that you are not winning. Noel Acciari had a goal and two assists Thursday. The goal wasn’t out of the ordinary as he has 19 but his pair of helpers almost doubled his total to five. Brian Boyle was injured on February 1 as he suffered an upper-body injury. There is no timetable for his return.

LOS ANGELES

Notes

The Kings play three games in four nights as part of their four-game week so look for Jonathan Quick to play at least twice and possibly three times with Cal Petersen getting the call once or twice. Petersen has looked good in his two starts since his recall from the minors as he has given up six goals on 72 shots. The Kings recalled Martin Frk this week, sending Carl Grundstrom to the minors. Trevor Moore is centering Blake Lizotte and Austin Wagner and scored in his second game with Los Angeles after a trade from Toronto last week. Lizotte has responded well as he has three assists in his last four games after picking up only one point in his previous 11 contests. Anze Kopitar ended a four-game points drought with a pair of assists Wednesday.

Notes

The Wild dealt Jason Zucker to Pittsburgh this week, receiving Alex Galchenyuk, Cale Addison and a conditional first-round pick in return. Galchenyuk started his Wild career on a line with Mats Zuccarello and Luke Kunin and was held pointless in 13:44 of action. Addison was drafted in the second round in 2019 and the offensive rearguard was a valued member of Team Canada’s 2020 World Junior gold-medal winning squad. He has 10 goals and 43 points in 39 games for Lethbridge of the WHL.  Kevin Fiala has been streaking of late. He saw his five-game points streak come to an end Thursday but had five goals and 10 points during the streak. He is up to 14 goals and 38 points in 52 games and is making everyone who thought the Wild were robbed last season when he was dealt from Nashville for Mikael Granlund, look foolish.

MONTREAL

Notes

Shea Weber suffered a sprained ankle on February 4 and is out for four-six weeks. The Canadiens have been getting a great season from Tomas Tatar who leads the team in points with 52. Montreal seems to be on the fringes of the playoffs at best as they trail Toronto by seven points and have played one more game, so Tatar could be gone at the trade deadline if the Habs think they are out of it. Montreal has to be happy with the play of rookie Nick Suzuki. Suzuki was acquired in the Max Pacioretty deal to Vegas and the rookie has 12 goals and 36 points in 59 games to date. The former Owen Sound Attack center was acquired with Tatar and a second-round pick in 2019 (Samuel Fagemo) in a trade that has benefitted both sides. Jonathan Drouin returned after missing almost three months of action with a wrist injury that required surgery and has not had a point in three games since coming back.

Notes

The Predators are in 10th place in the Western Conference after play on Thursday as they picked up a valuable two points in shutting out the Islanders 5-0. Juuse Saros has come alive of late with wins in four of his last five starts and he has been seeing a lot more of the crease than Pekka Rinne of late. Rinne has been having a tough season with a 3.11 GAA and a .895 save percentage and that has come mainly of late as he got off to a great start with an opening month of 8-0-2, giving up 21 goals in the 10 games with 11 coming in two starts. Since then, he has gone 9-13-1 and has given up 73 goals in 23 games, being pulled five times. Craig Smith picked up his first career hat-trick Thursday and has five goals in his last three contests.

NEW JERSEY

Notes

P.K. Subban played in his 700th career game Thursday.  Wayne Simmonds is on a three-game points streak and had a couple of goals Thursday in the win over Detroit. He has only seven goals and 23 points this season in what has been a bad deal for New Jersey thus far but he has four goals and eight points on the power play. Damon Severson had an assist Thursday and has an eight-game points streak. The defenseman also has 23 points this season but has come alive of late with five points on the power play during the streak. Jack Hughes has struggled this season but the first overall pick in the 2019 Draft has shown signs of greatness. He has seven goals and 20 points in 48 games and before you get too concerned with the lack of scoring, Joe Thornton only had seven points in 55 games as a rookie with Boston.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

Rested: vs. San Jose (Sunday)

Notes

The Islanders play four games this week so look for Semyon Varlamov and Thomas Greiss to split the goaltending. It was not a great outing for Greiss Thursday as he was pulled after giving up three goals on eight shots, 13 minutes into the game. Casey Cizikas is out three-four weeks with a leg laceration as he was cut by a skate in Tuesday’s win over the Flyers. Mathew Barzal has only two goals in his last 21 games. It looked like he was turning into a goal scorer earlier in the season and he had 16 goals in 35 games before Christmas, but it has been back to being a playmaker of late as he has 30 assists and 48 points in 56 games. After picking up points in his first two NHL games, Kieffer Bellows has not scored in his last three games.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

@ Chicago, @ Carolina, vs. San Jose

Tired: vs. San Jose (Saturday)

Notes

The Rangers three games in four nights. They continue to go with three goaltenders at this time with Igor Shesterkin seeing most of the action if his ankle has healed sufficiently. He should play twice and if the Rangers are going to deal Alexandar Georgiev, they likely will showcase him in the other contest. Coach David Quinn has anointed Shesterkin as his number one goalie. The Rangers and Chris Kreider’s agent have begun contract negotiations and if they prove to be unsuccessful, Kreider could be dealt at or before the February 24 trade deadline. Like the Devils’ Jack Hughes, Kaapo Kakko has struggled this season. The second overall pick in the 2019 Draft, Kakko has eight goals and 19 points in 52 games. Both are going to be great players in the future so if you can get either one in dynasty leagues, go for it.

OTTAWA

Notes

The Senators finish up their six-game homestand this week. Mark Borowiecki suffered an ankle injury Thursday and while it seems to be a high-ankle sprain at this time rather than a fracture, that can be an injury that takes longer to heal. The Senators are not going anywhere so his absence won’t hurt Ottawa’s chances of post-season play. It was a tough break for Borowiecki who missed the previous two games due to the birth of his son. Anthony Duclair has not scored since December 21, a span of 19 games. He had 21 goals in 35 games before the current drought. Connor Brown continues to lead the team with 35 points, one better than Duclair and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. Pageau and goalie Craig Anderson are two names being bandied about in trade talks.

PHILADELPHIA

Notes

The Flyers play a home-and-home series against Columbus this week and if there are any fisticuffs Joel Farabee has been the top penalty minutes player on the Flyers and he has been in a couple of fights. James van Riemsdyk is on a four-game points streak with three goals and seven points in the four contests. He is up to 17 goals and 37 points in 58 games. Carter Hart returned to game action this week with a couple of wins after he missed nine games with an abdominal strain. Shayne Gostisbehere played in one game after missing a month with a knee injury and subsequent arthroscopic surgery, but he has been forced to shut it down again after suffering lingering pain. He may have returned too soon according to coach Alain Vigneault.

Notes

The Penguins play four times this week including three games in four nights. Expect to see Matt Murray and Tristan Jarry share the net. Pittsburgh also plays Toronto in a home-and-home series and should tempers flare, there is no one who jumps out as being a fighter. The Penguins have had seven fights this season with seven different players including Sidney Crosby. Jason Zucker was not at all happy with his first game as a Penguin after a trade with Minnesota Monday night. "I don’t think I played very well tonight," Zucker said after his first game. "I thought my hands were terrible. I mishandled pretty much every puck I touched. I just tried to skate and tried to create some opportunities. I think I’ll be better next game." He lined up with Sidney Crosby and Dominik Simon and that can’t hurt his fantasy value (at least playing with Crosby).

ST. LOUIS

Notes

The Blues play four games this week including three games in four nights. Look for Jordan Binnington to play three games with Jake Allen playing once. The Blues game with Anaheim was postponed Tuesday when defenseman Jay Bouwmeester suffered a cardiac episode on the bench in the first period that required both team’s medical and training staff to work hard to save his life. He is recovering in hospital in Anaheim and doing quite well. He underwent an Implantable Cartioverter Defibrillator procedure and it was a success. We all send our best wishes to Bouwmeester and the family. No make up date has been decided upon at this time. Zach Sanford never had a hat trick at the NHL level until Thursday and he did one better than that, with a four-goal performance in Vegas. He has 12 goals and 25 points in 44 games and kudos to you if you had him in your lineup or even better, in your DFS lineup.

Notes

The Sharks play three games in four nights as part of their four-game week. Aaron Dell should see the crease three times with the disappointing Martin Jones playing once. Jones has lost his last four games (0-3-1) and has given up 14 goals on 113 shots. He is 13-17-2 with a horrible 3.25 GAA and a .889 save percentage. Logan Couture has been skating of late but there is no timetable for his return from a broken bone in his ankle, suffered on January 7. The Sharks top forward was projected to be out six weeks so his return should be this week, but there are no guarantees. Erik Karlsson leads the Sharks with 40 points while Evander Kane, Brent Burns and Timo Meier all have 37.

Andrei Vasilevskiy has been on a streak. He has not lost in regulation since December 14 and has given the Lightning points in each of his last 20 starts. He is 31-9-3 with a 2.41 GAA and a .921 save percentage. He was the third star of the week with a 3-0-0 record to go with a 1.67 GAA and a .936 save percentage. Nikita Kucherov is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and he joins Steven Stamkos and Anthony Cirelli on the sidelines. Stamkos had been red-hot before his injury as he was on a four-game goal scoring streak and has eight goals in his last seven contests. He has 26 goals and 59 points in 52 games. Ryan McDonagh is out another week after blocking a shot a week ago. Even with all the injuries, Tampa Bay is one point behind Boston for the Atlantic Division lead as they have been on a tear of late.

The Maple Leafs play a home-and-home series with the Penguins and the newly-acquired Kyle Clifford should flex his muscles should the need arise. Auston Matthews potted his 41st goal of the season Thursday and is tied for the league-lead with David Pastrnak. Andreas Johnsson suffered a knee injury Thursday and an update will likely be provided shortly. The Maple Leafs signed Pierre Engvall to a two-year extension. Zach Hyman continues to have a fantastic season as he has three goals in his last two games and has a four-game scoring streak. He has 17 goals and 31 points in 39 games. He is only two points away from tying his career high in points, set last season in 32 more games. The Canucks complete their six-game homestand this week with a pair of contests. Jacob Markstrom had a 49-save shutout Wednesday against the Chicago Blackhawks as he is back on track after giving up 13 goals during a three-game stretch two games previous to the shutout. Brock Boeser has missed the last two games with an upper-body injury and will be re-evaluated on the weekend. Micheal Ferland is headed to the AHL on a conditioning stint. He has been out of action since December 10 with a concussion. He will be a great addition once he returns. J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson lead the Canucks with 57 points. Rookie Quinn Hughes had a trio of assists Monday and has 44 points in 57 games as he is a big contender for the Calder.

The Golden Knights play four games this week including three in four nights. Marc-Andre Fleury (who has struggled mightily this season) should get three starts with Malcolm Subban playing once. The Golden Knights complete a five-game homestand before travelling out to Anaheim Sunday. Vegas is tied for second in the Pacific but it is quite the dogfight as Vancouver has 69 points with Edmonton, Vegas and Calgary at 66 and Arizona at 64. The three California teams are right out of it. Jonathan Marchessault hit the 20-goal mark Thursday, scoring twice on 11 shots on goal, to become the fourth Golden Knight to hit the plateau this season. Chandler Stephenson is centering Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone and has thrived in the role. He has eight goals and 18 points in 30 games with Vegas with a plus-17 rating.

The Capitals play four games this week including three contests in four nights. Braden Holtby and Ilya Samsonov will likely share the net. Holtby got the Capitals back on track Thursday in a 3-2 win over Colorado as Washington had given up 12 goals in its previous two games, losing to the Flyers and Islanders at home. The Alex Ovechkin saga continues as he has gone three straight games without a goal as his quest for goal number 700 in his NHL career continues. He is at 698, but to say that he is going to get it this week, if not sooner, is up in the air as scoring two goals a week during the NHL schedule will get you 54 on the season. That is tough to do. Evgeny Kuznetsov is day-to-day after suffering an upper-body injury Monday when he was crushed along the boards by Leo Komarov. He skated on Thursday and could return this week.

The Jets play three games in four nights as part of their four-game week. Look for Connor Hellebuyck to play three games with Laurent Brossoit playing once. Blake Wheeler is dealing with an illness and while he should play this week, he is questionable until then. The Jets inked coach Paul Maurice to a three-year contract extension. Kyle Connor was the NHL’s second star of the week. The winger had three goals and eight points in three games and has 28 goals and 59 points in 58 contests this season. It looks like the seven-year deal he signed before the start of the season, may be a good one for both sides as he is tied with Mark Scheifele f
