SAO PAULO, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Brazilian airline Azul and Lilium GmbH have agreed to a $1 billion partnership to operate electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) airplanes in Brazil, the companies said on Monday.
Azul intends to buy 220 Lilium electric aircraft with an aim of starting operations in 2025. Lilium said it decided to partner with Azul on the launch because Brazil has almost 100 million domestic air passengers a year and is currently one of the world's leading civilian helicopter and business aviation markets.
Lilium said Azul would help it with regulatory approvals for the aircraft in Brazil.
Lilium plans to be in operation in multiple regions in 2025, and the Brazil launch plans could provide incremental revenue alongside previously announced network launch plans in Europe and the United States. (Reporting by Tatiana Bautzer Editing by Paul Simao)
