Brie Larson isn’t here for your sexist reactions to the “Captain Marvel” trailer that dropped online September 18. A small corner of the internet reacted to the trailer by criticizing it for not featuring the titular superhero smiling more (via Vox). One Twitter user went so far as to take screenshots of Larson in the trailer and photoshop a smile onto her face.
Captain Marvel happens to be the first female superhero to receive her own solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This sexist reaction obviously found its way to Larson, who responded to it by posting to social media photoshopped posters for “Iron Man 3,” “Doctor Strange,” and “Captain America” featuring the male superheroes smiling.
“Captain Marvel” stars Brie Larson in the title role. The film is a spin on the traditional superhero origin story as it finds half-human, half-Kree Captain Marvel crash-landing on Earth, where she’s forced to prevent a war between two alien races while rediscovering her past as Carol Danvers. The supporting cast includes Jude Law, Lee Pace, and Samuel L. Jackson, reprising his role as MCU favorite Nick Fury.
Disney is set to release “Captain Marvel” nationwide March 8, 2019. The film is being viewed as a game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the same way Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” was for the DC Extended Universe. The MCU has yet to center an entire feature around a female superhero (Evangeline Lilly shared the title with Paul Rudd on this summer’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp”). The film gives Larson her biggest blockbuster yet following a supporting turn in “Kong: Skull Island.”
