Brighton produced the shock of the weekend by holding Champions League semi-finalists Chelsea to a 1-1 draw.

Hope Powell’s side went ahead through Aileen Whelan in the 84th minute, Finn Adelina Engman equalising for Chelsea in stoppage time. They came close to a winner in the final seconds when Maria Thorisdottir hit the crossbar.

Joint leaders Manchester City have started with back-to-back wins, having defeated Reading 2-0. Pauline Bremer scored both their goals and would have had a hat-trick but hit the post.

The Germany international has scored four times in her last two games since returning from a lengthy injury. She has stepped up in the absence of Georgia Stanway, out with a hamstring injury for the next six weeks.

Everton also have a 100 per cent record, with Chloe Kelly getting both their goals in quick succession in a 2-0 win against Bristol City. First, Kelly curled a long-range effort in off the far post, then added a 35-yard drive.

West Ham also collected their first win of the season, against Birmingham City, via a single goal from Adriana Leon in the 27th minute.
