Budget impasse, earnings in focus

Political deadlock will likely remain the primary topic on investors' minds with few other events on the calendar.

The only economic releases come before the opening bell, when Germany reports trade numbers and manufacturers orders. There are no U.S. data releases.

Attention will likely focus toward companies, however, as third-quarter earnings season gets underway. Alcoa and Yum Brands report after the closing bell.

Tomorrow brings results from Costco, Fastenal, and Family Dollar before the opening bell. The Federal Reserve will also issue minutes from its last meeting in the afternoon.

Thursday features retailer same-store sales, plus earnings from Micron Technology and Safeway in the evening.

JP Morgan and Wells Fargo report Friday morning, followed by consumer sentiment.

The focus remains on financials early next week as companies including Citigroup, Bank of America, and Goldman Sachs issue their results.
