Burger King to cut some menu items to speed up restaurant drive-thru lines

Has Burger King's drive-thru felt slower than normal? The parent company of the fast-food chain said changes are coming to speed up service.

Jose Cil, CEO of Restaurant Brands International, which owns chains including Burger King, Popeyes and Tim Horton's, said the company plans to cut some Burger King menu items so their drive-thrus can operate more quickly.

During a presentation made Wednesday at Morgan Stanley's Global Consumer and Retail Conference, Cil said the company noticed the chain's speed of drive-thru service had "declined significantly."

"We're working on eliminating SKUs that – we're simplifying processes that have become a bit too complicated in terms of sandwich builds, and doing a better job in terms of the menu design to make it easier for the customer, at the drive-thru in particular, to make quicker decisions," he said.

Cil also said other advances such as technology for preparing sandwiches and digital menu boards are helping make drive-thrus more efficient.

Burger King isn't the only restaurant experiencing delays at the drive-thru. A study released in September by SeeLevelHX, a customer experience measurement company, found wait times for receiving a drive-thru order increased by more than 25 seconds this year.

In order accuracy, Burger King tied Arby's and Carl's Jr. tied for third among 10 big fast-food brands, the study found. Chick-fil-A ranked first, followed by Taco Bell.

Other fast-food chains have curbed their menu offerings amid the pandemic, but have slowly brought some of those items back. In August, Taco Bell announced it would bring back breakfast nationwide starting in September after scaling back due to the pandemic.

Last year, McDonald's said it was pulling its popular all-day breakfast menu to streamline operations at the start of the pandemic.
