SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) _ Calithera Biosciences Inc. (CALA) on Wednesday reported a loss of $18.8 million in its third quarter.

On a per-share basis, the South San Francisco, California-based company said it had a loss of 52 cents.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 41 cents per share.

Calithera shares have decreased 40 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $5.05, a drop of 69 percent in the last 12 months.
