What to make of Cam Newton’s cryptic post saying he’s ‘not here for a long time’
Tucked into his latest Instagram post, Cam Newton may have dropped a breadcrumb of information about his future with the New England Patriots.
Newton quoted lyrics from George Strait’s song, “Here For A Good Time.” And considering Newton’s uncertain future with New England on a one-year deal, his decision to include two lines should create significant intrigue: “I’m not here for a long time. I’m here for a good time.”
Newton may simply be reflecting upon the fact that life is short. Newton may just be referring to how NFL careers can feel short. But again, with Newton playing on a one-year contract in New England, he may be acknowledging that he expects to move on in 2021.

It’s fair for Newton to imagine that he’ll play elsewhere next year. The Patriots are famous for short-changing their free agents, and so he’d have to win them over in a big way in 2020 in order to earn a lucrative contract. But of course, they would probably have to win him over, too. Because if he plays well enough to earn a big contract from the Patriots, there will surely be another team in free agency willing to pay more. He’ll have to like New England enough to take a smaller contract — at least, if we’re using history as our guide.
To complicate the matter, Newton may not have a choice. The Patriots could simply place the franchise tag on the quarterback.
