When Cardi B and Offset got engaged last year, they were already married

So it turns out that the reason Offset keeps referring to Cardi B as his wife — like at last night’s BET Awards — and vice versa is because she is.

Yes, the rapping pair who publicly became engaged in October actually got married a month before — Sept. 20, 2017 — in a secret ceremony. TMZ obtained a copy of their marriage certificate — under their real names, Kiari Kendrell Cephus and Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar — issued in Fulton County, Ga., last year.

Soon after, Cardi confirmed the news on social media. She wrote that because she shares so much of her life publicly, she wanted to keep their wedding “for myself.” She wrote, “Our relationship was so new — breaking up and making up — and we had a lot of growing up to do.” But they were “so in love” that they “didn’t want to lose each other.” She said that they woke up on Sept. 20, decided to get married, found someone to officiate, and tied the knot with just one witness, her cousin. “I said ‘I do’ with no dress no makeup and no ring,” she wrote. As for the proposal, she said that Offset wanted her to have that “special moment that every girl dreams of.” She ended her post by quipping, “Well, now you since you lil nosey f***s know at least ya can stop saying I had a baby out of wedlock.”

As Cardi, 25, noted, the wedding took place one month before Offset, 26, publicly proposed to her at the Migos show during Power 99’s Powerhouse concert in Philadelphia on Oct. 27, and Cardi looked stunned as he dropped to his knees and gave her an 8-carat diamond.

The pair, whose first date was at the 2017 Super Bowl, is expecting their first child together any second now. (He picked out a name for the baby.) It’s a girl.

Cardi mentioned drama in their relationship, and there has been a lot. News of the September wedding is interesting because Offset was reportedly caught cheating on Cardi late that month. They briefly split in October, trading words on social media, but they made up soon after. In December, she addressed cheating rumors onstage in a concert, telling the audience: “I let a n**ga know, though. You do that s*** again, you gone lose your wife.” Notice she said wife.

In January, there were more rumors of trouble after another incident of cheating, which was discovered via an iCloud hack. Around that time, Cardi responded to a fan’s question about Offset cheating by saying, “No, it’s not right for a [n***a] to cheat…But what you want me to do? Go f*** me another n***a? Start all over again and get cheated on again? This s*** happens to everyone and I be too, you too…People handle they relationship different soo.” In February, Cardi told Cosmo there was more to the story. “It’s not right, what he f***ing did — but people don’t know what I did, ’cause I ain’t no angel,” said the former stripper. Her song “Be Careful” addressed his cheating as well.

Last week, Cardi and Offset, who has fathered three children with three different women, were featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. They spoke at length about their relationship and their plans for raising their baby.

Needless to say, their fans had their minds blown with this new marriage news — despite the hints they’ve dropped along the way.
