Cardi B, Raging Against Her Tax Bill, Has Never Been More Relatable

The “Bodak Yellow”–hitmaker took to Instagram last night to decry her tax bill.

As April nears, we in the United States are reminded that tax season is once again upon us. It is a humbling time for all of us, as proven by our president, whose unreleased tax returns are likely to continue to be a topic of conversation until they’re revealed (here’s looking at you, Robert Mueller). While there’s a fair amount of Internet buzz around the week of Tax Day itself—to remind, that’s April 17 this year—one particularly notable person has provided us with a preemptive tax-related rant, and it’s none other than Cardi B.

Last night, she posted a black-and-white selfie video to Instagram, presumably shortly after receiving her tax bill. “So you know the government is taking 40 percent of my taxes and, Uncle Sam, I want to know what you’re doing with my f***ing tax money!” she demanded. “When you donate to a kid from a foreign country, they give you updates of what they’re doing with your donation, and I want to know what you’re doing with my f***ing tax money because I’m from New York, and the streets are always dirty. We were voted the dirtiest city in America. What are y’all doing?”

To be honest, we couldn’t agree more—though the heart of Cardi B’s complaints focus on New York City’s issues (the streets and the subways), which would not be handled at the federal level, it would be really nice to get personal receipts for where our specific contributions are going. (Philip Bump, at The Washington Post, for his part, provided some handy pie charts.) For now though, there’s Cardi B’s relatable rant to help you through tax season.
