Carl Icahn takes 'medium-sized' stake in VMware: report

Mike Murphy

Activist investor Carl Icahn has taken a "medium-sized" stake in VMware Inc. , CNBC reported Tuesday night. Icahn's shares are below the 5% level that require public disclosure, CNBC said. The virtualization-software company is 80% owned by privately held Dell Inc., which has been considering merging the companies. While Icahn's intentions remain unknown, he unsuccessfully fought Michael Dell's effort to take Dell private in 2013. VMware shares were down about 0.6% in after-hours trading, after ending the day up 3.2%. For the year, VMware is up 5.2%, compared to the S&P 500's 1.2% gain.
