A celebrity plastic surgeon known as ‘Dr Bumbum’ has been charged with murder after he went on the run when one of his patients died.

The surgeon – whose real name is Dr Denis Furtado – went missing after patient Lilian Calixto, 46, died in hospital after he carried out a buttock enlargement procedure on her.

Dr Furtado, 45, carried out the procedure in his own flat, aided by his mother, girlfriend and maid.

Mother-of-two Ms Calixto fell ill during the operation at the property in Rio de Janeiro last month and died in hospital a few hours later.

Dr Furtado later fled but police in Brazil caught him four days later and he has now been charged him with murder, while his mother, Maria de Fátima Barros Furtado, also faces charges.

His girlfriend, Renata Fernandes, has already been arrested on suspicion of taking part in the procedure.

The plastic surgeon, who has nearly 650,000 followers on Instagram, is a regular on Brazilian TV screens and ‘had attracted women with the false promise of quick and immediate beauty’, according to the public prosecutor’s office in Rio de Janeiro.

He is alleged to have used 300ml of PMMA – a synthetic resin also known as acrylic glass filler – during the procedure, ‘when it is recommended that it is used only in very small doses and in a restricted way’.

The Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society has warned against using PMMA for any aesthetic purposes.

The charge sheet against Dr Furtado alleges that he prepared his flat for surgery ‘in a very provisional and precarious way’.

He was also not licensed to practice in Rio.

In a video posted on social media, Dr Furtado described Ms Calixto’s death as a ‘fatal accident’ and said he had performed 9,000 similar procedures, all of which were legal in Brazil.
