The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Charter Hall Long WALE REIT (ASX:CLW) share price is up 19% in the last year, clearly besting than the market return of around 5.4% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Charter Hall Long WALE REIT the TSR over the last year was 27%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

And the share price momentum remains respectable, with a gain of 13% in the last three months.
