Cheeses sold at Whole Foods, Safeway recalled after listeria outbreak
Twenty brands of cheese sold at Whole Foods, Safeway and more than a dozen other big-name grocery stores have been recalled after people across six states were hospitalized after being infected with listeria.
The recall by Benton Harbor, Michigan-based Old Europe Cheese involves all of its Brie and Camembert cheeses sold across the U.S. and in Mexico, the FDA reported Friday.
The cheeses have "best by" dates through Dec.14, 2022, the company announced in a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
According to the recall, issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the cheeses were sold at supermarkets from Aug. 1, 2022, through Sept. 28, 2022.

The products were sold at the following retailers: Albertsons, Athenian Foods, Fresh Thyme, Giant Foods, Harding's, Lidl, Market Basket, Meijer, Price Chopper, Raley's, Safeway, Save Mart, Sprouts, Stop & Shop and Whole Foods.

The FDA cautioned against eating the recalled cheese in light of an outbreak of listeria infections that made at least six people sick after they got listeria in California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey and Texas. Of those sickened, five were hospitalized.
Of the five people who provided information to the FDA, four reported eating Brie or Camembert cheese before becoming ill, the agency reported.
As of Saturday, no deaths had been reported in connection to the cheese.
The FDA and the CDC are both investigating the outbreak.
Listeria is most likely to sicken pregnant people and their newborns, adults 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems, the FDA says. Other people can be infected with listeria, but they rarely become seriously ill.
Symptoms, the agency reports, include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.
Anyone with listeria symptoms after eating Old Europe Cheese Inc. or Reny Picot brand Brie and Camembert products should call a doctor, the FDA warned.
