Cheryl Cole wants the tabloids to leave her mom alone.

Over the weekend, Liam Payne and Cole announced they were splitting after two years together. The One Direction singer, 24, and former X Factor judge — who are parents to a 1-year-old son, Bear — posted similar statements, with all signs pointing to an amicable breakup. Still, it hasn’t stopped the media from speculating as to what really happened.

Cole, 35, is making it clear that her mom, Joan Callaghan, had nothing to do with it. She posted the following statement on Twitter: “I hate responding to stuff esp at such difficult times but I cannot sit here and listen to such nasty, false articles regarding my mam. I don’t know why they involve her in stories about me. I can assure you she has absolutely nothing to do with any of it. I am a grown woman who is capable of dealing with my own life. She is a soft and kind woman who doesn’t deserve to be dragged into something that has nothing whatsoever to do with her.”

It would seem as if Payne agrees — he liked the tweet.

When breakup rumors swirled in March, reports in the U.K. claimed that Payne “has blamed Cheryl’s close relationship with her mum Joan for the strain in their relationship.” It seems the same narrative is floating around the tabloids once again.

Cole has taken to Twitter before to debunk rumors — like when Liam Payne was linked to three other women, including Katy Perry.

Payne dismissed reports of a split this spring. “The funniest thing was a week before we were getting married. The next week we’re splitting up,” he told the U.K.’s Evening Standard. “And the thing for me is, I just like to think we’re somewhere in the middle.”

He added, “You know, we have our struggles. Like, of course, I’m not gonna sit here and say that everything’s absolutely fine and dandy, because of course you go through different things, and that’s what a relationship is.”
