Chiefs’ Andy Reid doubts Patrick Mahomes will miss practice time after death of his girlfriend’s stepfather

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes reported to the Chiefs’ practice facility as normal Monday, a day after the stepfather of his girlfriend collapsed outside of Arrowhead Stadium before Sunday’s game and later died at a hospital.

The Chiefs did not make Mahomes available to speak to media Monday. Head coach Andy Reid gave reporters a brief update on the situation during his regularly scheduled news conference.

“We’re sorry to hear about what took place yesterday,” Reid said. “Our prayers and blessings are with the family.

“I’ve talked to Patrick and they’re doing well, for the circumstance that took place. As they go through this mourning period our prayers and thoughts are with them.”

Mahomes’ girlfriend, Brittany Matthews, announced the death of her stepfather via Instagram. Mahomes left Arrowhead Stadium so quickly following Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals that he didn’t speak to reporters.

Reid was asked if the event will affect Mahomes’ preparation for the Chiefs’ upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams on “Monday Night Football” in Mexico City.

“I don’t think it will,” Reid said. “He, again, is here this morning. They’ve got things organized and settled down from that side of it, so he can do what he’s got to do.”

And when asked again if Mahomes could miss practice time, Reid reiterated that he doubts it, though he left some room for circumstance to change.

“I don’t think so — I don’t think he will,” Reid said. “If he has to, though, that’s not a big deal either, so he’ll be alright either way.”

Mahomes, 23, is the breakout star of the 2018 NFL season for the Chiefs, who currently own the AFC’s best record at 9-1.

A first-round pick a year ago, Mahomes is on pace to throw for 5,040 yards, 50 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and is a legitimate MVP candidate.
