DURHAM, N.C. (AP) _ Chimerix Inc. (CMRX) on Wednesday reported a loss of $18.4 million in its second quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Durham, North Carolina-based company said it had a loss of 39 cents.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 44 cents per share.

The biopharmaceutical company posted revenue of $1.2 million in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $937,000.

The company's shares closed at $4.30. A year ago, they were trading at $4.93.
