The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But in contrast you can make much more than 100% if the company does well. For example, the China Tianrui Group Cement Company Limited (HKG:1252) share price has soared 246% in the last three years. That sort of return is as solid as granite.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
China Tianrui Group Cement was able to grow its EPS at 73% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. The average annual share price increase of 51% is actually lower than the EPS growth. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 11.88.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between China Tianrui Group Cement's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that China Tianrui Group Cement's TSR of 246% over the last 3 years is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that China Tianrui Group Cement shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 1.9% over the last year. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 26% a year, is even better. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. Is China Tianrui Group Cement cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
