Chipotle is about to start testing new desserts.
One of the new items is called buñuelos, a Mexican dessert made of fried tortillas topped with honey, sugar, and cinnamon, and served with an apple caramel dipping sauce, the company said Tuesday.
Chipotle will start testing the buñuelos next month, Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold told Business Insider.
The company revealed last year that it would be adding its first-ever dessert to its menu. But the company has kept details about the new menu item under wraps until Tuesday.
Chipotle also revealed Tuesday that same-restaurant sales — or sales at restaurants open at least a year — rose 17.8% in the first quarter, marking the first time hat metric has turned positive since late 2015, when two E. coli outbreaks linked to Chipotle's food in 14 states sent sales tumbling.
The company said first-quarter revenue increased 28.1% to $1.07 billion. Chipotle's shares rose 4% in after-hours trading Tuesday.
The new dessert represents the third major addition to Chipotle's menu in two decades.
After nearly 20 years of leaving its menu largely unchanged, Chipotle added tofu sofritas in 2014 and then added chorizo — a chicken and pork sausage blend — last October.
The company said last year that it would start adding new menu items on a regular basis as it tries to restore customer traffic following the E. coli outbreaks.
