Chiquita Brands International, Inc: Chiquita Announces $100,000 Contribution to United Way of Central Carolinas


Initial proceeds from fourth Chiquita Classic to benefit Charlotte area charities

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - September 5, 2013 - Chiquita Brands International, Inc. (CQB) today announced that it has raised $100,000 in proceeds thus far from the 2013 Chiquita Classic tournament which have been donated to United Way of Central Carolinas as the primary charity beneficiary of the Chiquita Classic. The announcement came during an event to unveil the 2013 United Way campaign goal of $21,438,000 at the Chiquita Classic, which is being held at River Run Country Club in Davidson, NC, through September 8.

"Building communities is at the core of our purpose and values and a hallmark of our more than 100 years as a company," said Ed Lonergan, Chiquita`s President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are proud to partner with the United Way as the primary beneficiary of the Chiquita Classic and believe this will be the best way to provide funds locally where they are most needed. We hope this will be the first of many years partnering together to help build our local community."

Since 1931, United Way of Central Carolinas has been serving the Charlotte area, working to create lasting change for those most in need through community philanthropy in three vital areas: Children and Youth, Housing and Stability and Health and Mental Health. Today, they serve a five-county region that includes Anson, Cabarrus, Charlotte/Mecklenburg, Mooresville/Lake Norman, and Union.

In conjunction with the tournament`s support of United Way of Central Carolinas, the Chiquita Classic has also participated in the "Charity Ticket Program," which enables Charlotte-area 501c3 charities to sell Chiquita Classic tickets and retain 100 percent of the sales for the benefit of their respective organizations. The program will also serve as an additional avenue for United Way`s fundraising campaign, which supports more than 80 partner agencies across a five-county region.

Chiquita`s contribution to the United Way may exceed $100,000 when the tournament has concluded. Additional tickets continue to be available for sale for the event through this Sunday, September 8 and any additional proceeds from sales will be donated to the United Way. Since its inception in 2011, the Chiquita Classics have raised more than $600,000 for charitable organizations. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament will also benefit The First Tee of Charlotte.
