Ciena up sharply on surprise profit

Sees Increased Telecom Spending

Ciena earned $0.02 a share in the second quarter on revenue of $507.7 million. Analysts had expected a loss of $0.01 and only $483.6 million on the top line. Guidance was also strong and CIEN gains 11 percent before the bell on my tradeMONSTER platform.

Novavax Gains on Potential Vaccine

Novavax said it managed to produce a vaccine candidate with the potential to protect against the recently emerging Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, first identified last September. The disease has killed 30 people so far and spread from the Middle East to Europe. NVAX gains 11 percent on the news.

VeriFone Craters on Weak Results, Outlook

VeriFone Systems earned $0.42 a share in the second quarter, missing the $0.47 consensus estimate. Revenue of $426.29 million also lagged the $440 million forecast by the Street. In addition, guidance was well below current expectations. PAY drops 16 percent in the premarket.
