CMT Music Awards postponed to October due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

The annual CMT Music Awards won't return to Nashville in June, organizers said Friday.

The show, originally scheduled for June 3, will now take place Oct. 14, a Wednesday night.

A statement from CMT did not specify which Nashville venue would host the ceremony. In previous years, the annual program provided a kickoff to CMA Fest week.

"Our top priority this last month has been rebuilding our hometown of Nashville following the tornado and ensuring the safety of our fans, employees, artists and partners during the COVID-19 crisis," said a statement from the Viacom-owned cable network.

"As we look forward to celebrating country music’s biggest stars together with our community and viewers, we will continue to follow the guidance of the CDC and local public health officials."

The show joins a growing list of major country music events impacted by COVID-19. The ACM Awards, typically held in Las Vegas each April, were postponed to September. CMA Fest, one of the world's largest country music festivals, was canceled outright and plans to return in 2021.
