Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But if you pick the right stock, you can make a lot more than 100%. For example, the CNX Resources Corporation (NYSE:CNX) share price has soared 104% return in just a single year. It's also good to see the share price up 26% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 15% in 90 days). Zooming out, the stock is actually down 5.8% in the last three years.
CNX Resources isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
In the last year CNX Resources saw its revenue shrink by 30%. We're a little surprised to see the share price pop 104% in the last year. This is a good example of how buyers can push up prices even before the fundamental metrics show much growth. Of course, it could be that the market expected this revenue drop.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for CNX Resources in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that CNX Resources shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 104% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 14% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that CNX Resources is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , you should know about...
