The concept for Whatsitsface came to Paul one day when she was playing with her young daughter, who would create elaborate play scenarios with her dozens of beloved stuffed animals. What if these stuffed animals could come to life in some way to enhance playtime?
The spark of an idea for Whatsitsface was born that day, but five years of hard work would follow before Paul could see her idea come to market. A graphic designer by profession, Paul had no engineering expertise to construct the mechanism that would allow the faces to turn and flip. Like many great business ideas, her concept started with a sketch, evolved to crude prototypes, then finally to a 3D printed model which enabled her to approach manufacturers with a more flushed out idea to get pricing and production settled. She also had to navigate the worlds of patent and trademark law, overseas manufacturing, distribution and logistics, and e-commerce.
Whatsitsface launched commercially in August 2019, and in just a few short months has gained an enthusiastic social media following and a strong sales trajectory with a direct-to-consumer marketing campaign.
