This week in The Power Rankings, we will also look at each team’s top scoring defenseman. The record in the brackets beside each team is their record for the week.

1. Colorado

Record: 7-0-1 (3-0-1)

(Last Week -2)

The Avalanche played all four on the road and beat Washington, Florida and Tampa Bay while losing in overtime to Pittsburgh.  They are in St. Louis and Vegas and then take on Anaheim at home. Cale Makar has yet to score but has seven assists in eight games.

2. Edmonton

Record: 7-1-1 (2-1-1)

The Oilers hit their first road bump this week and were still 2-1-1. They lost to Chicago to start the week and dropped a 1-0 game in a shootout Sunday. In between, the Oilers beat Philadelphia and Detroit. This week they take on Minnesota on the road and head home to play Washington and Florida. Oscar Klefbom lead all defensemen with a goal and eight assists.

3. Buffalo  

Record: 7-1-1 (3-1-0)

The Sabres lost to Anaheim but beat Dallas, Los Angeles and San Jose in a pretty successful California road trip. They return home to face San Jose again, after which they are in New York to play the Rangers, as well as in Detroit to finish the week. Rasmus Dahlin has a goal and nine points. Not too shabby for a 19-year-old defenseman.

4. Boston 

Record: 5-1-2 (1-0-2)

Boston defeated Anaheim to start the week and then lost two in extra time as Tampa Bay beat them in a shootout while Toronto scored in overtime for the win. This week the Bruins get a return match with Toronto but at home, and then host St. Louis before heading to New York to face the Rangers. Torey Krug has a goal and five assists in eight contests.

5. Washington

Record: 6-2-2 (3-1-0)

(Last Week -9)

The Capitals lost to Colorado and then won three straight, defeating Toronto, the New York Rangers and Chicago. This week the Caps play in Western Canada with visits to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. John Carlson not only leads Washington in points with 18, but the entire NHL as he is one point up on Connor McDavid.

6. Carolina

Record:6-3-0 (1-2-0)

(Last Week -4)

It was a tough week for Carolina as they lost on the road to both San Jose and Anaheim after shutting out Los Angeles. They are in Columbus and then take on Chicago at home. Dougie Hamilton has five goals and 10 points and leads the Hurricanes in scoring.

7. Anaheim 

Record:6-3-0 (2-2-0)

(Last Week -6)

The Ducks split the week sandwiching losses to Boston and Calgary around a couple of wins over Buffalo and Carolina. The Ducks head on the road this week, playing in Nashville, Dallas, Colorado and Vegas. Hampus Lindholm has six assists to lead Anaheim on the blueline.

8. Pittsburgh

Record: 6-3-0 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -10)

The Penguins beat Colorado and Dallas but then had their five-game win streak end at the hands of Vegas. The Penguins are on the road in the South as they take on Florida, Tampa Bay and Dallas this week. Kris Letang has four goals and 10 points in nine games thus far.

9. Vegas

Record: 6-3-0 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -11)

The Golden Knights lost to Nashville to start the week but then beat Ottawa in a shootout and Pittsburgh in a shutout to end the week at 2-1.  They start the week on the road against Philadelphia and Chicago before coming home to play Colorado and Anaheim. Shea Theodore has a goal and four helpers in nine games.

10. Tampa Bay

Record: 4-3-1 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -8)

The Lightning knocked off Montreal, won in a shootout over Boston and then were whipped 6-2 by Colorado. This week they play twice at home versus Pittsburgh and Nashville. Kevin Shattenkirk has four goals and seven points while Victor Hedman has a goal and six assists.

11. Toronto

Record: 5-3-1 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -12) 

Toronto won both home games against Minnesota and Boston but lost on the road to Washington. They are home to Columbus and San Jose this week and on the road to play Boston and Montreal. Morgan Rielly has two goals and nine assists in nine games.

12. Calgary

Record: 5-4-1 (3-1-0)

(Last Week -14)

The Flames won three-of-four this week, defeating Philadelphia, Detroit and Anaheim but dropping a 4-1 decision to Los Angeles. The Flames play Washington and Florida at home as well as Winnipeg on the road this week. Mark Giordano, last year’s Norris Trophy winner, has six points including two goals thus far. 

13. Nashville

Record: 4-3-1 (1-1-1)

(Last Week -13)

The Predators split the week, defeating Vegas, losing to Arizona and dropping a 3-2 decision to Florida in a shootout. The Predators are home to Anaheim and Minnesota and then head to Tampa Bay to play the Lightning. Ryan Ellis leads the team in points with 11.

14. Florida

Record: 3-2-3 (2-0-1)

(Last Week -19)

The Panthers in overtime to Colorado but then beat New Jersey and Nashville. They are home to Pittsburgh before heading to Western Canada to play Calgary and Edmonton this week. MacKenzie Weeger has two goals and three assists while Aaron Ekblad has five helpers to lead the Panthers defensive corps in points.

15. New York Islanders

Record: 5-3-0 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -20)

New York won all three this week, defeating St. Louis, Winnipeg and Columbus. The week they are home to Arizona and Philadelphia and play in Ottawa as well. Devon Toews has two goals and three assists in eight games for the Islanders.

16. St. Louis

Record: 3-2-3 (0-1-2)

(Last Week -7)

The Blues lost in overtime to the Islanders, in a shootout to Vancouver and outright to Montreal this week. They face Colorado and Los Angeles at home and then travel to Boston and Detroit. Alex Pietrangelo has three goals and five points in eight games. 

17. Arizona

Record: 4-2-1 (3-0-0)       

(Last Week -25)

The Coyotes were perfect this week in knocking off Winnipeg, Nashville and Ottawa. They will try to keep the winning streak going as they are in the New York area to face the Rangers, Islanders and New Jersey. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Alex Goligoski have four points to lead the Coyotes.

18. Winnipeg

Record: 5-5-0 (1-2-0)

(Last Week -16)

The Jets finally snapped a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 shootout win over Edmonton Sunday. They previously lost this week to Arizona and the New York Islanders. This week, the Jets are home for a couple as Los Angeles and Calgary come to town. Neal Pionk and Josh Morrissey each have six points in 10 games (Morrissey has played in only eight) with Pionk scoring twice while Morrissey still has yet to find the back of the net.

19. Vancouver

Record:5-3-0 (3-1-0)

(Last Week -22)

The Canucks had another nice week as they beat Detroit, St. Louis (in a shootout) and the Rangers while dropping a 1-0 decision to the Devils. The Canucks have won five of their last six after starting the season with a couple of losses to the Alberta teams. This week is light as they are in Detroit before coming home to play the Capitals. Alexander Edler leads with three goals and six points.

20. Montreal

Record: 4-3-2 (2-2-0)

(Last Week -17)

The Canadiens lost to Tampa Bay and Minnesota to begin and end the week. They defeated Minnesota and St. Louis in between. This week the Canadiens have a couple of home games against San Jose and Toronto. Jeff Petry leads the Habs blueline in points with six including a couple of power play goals.

21. San Jose

Record: 3-5-0 (1-1-0)

(Last Week -21)

The Sharks played a couple of tough teams from the East and beat Carolina before succumbing to Buffalo. This week they Sharks head on the road for four games as they play in Buffalo, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. Brent Burns leads the Sharks with a goal and seven helpers in eight games.

22. Columbus

Record: 3-3-2 (1-0-2)

(Last Week -23)

The Blue Jackets started the week with a win over Dallas before losing a couple of contests in overtime as Chicago and the New York Islanders prevailed. This week, they are in Toronto and Philadelphia and home to Carolina. Seth Jones is tied for the team lead in points with four.

23. Philadelphia 

Record: 2-3-1 (0-3-0)

(Last Week -18)

The Flyers lost all three this week as Calgary, Edmonton and Dallas were all victorious. This week the Flyers play four times including home games against Vegas and Columbus while playing on the road versus Chicago and the New York Islanders. Ivan Provorov has four points in six games.

24. Detroit

Record: 3-5-0 (0-3-0)

(Last Week -24) 

The Red Wings lost in Western Canada as Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton beat them. This week they play four games as Vancouver, Buffalo and St. Louis come in and they play in Ottawa for their one road games. Danny DeKeyser leads the Red Wings blueliners with four assists. Mike Green has a goal in eight games.

25. Los Angeles  

Record:3-5-0 (1-2-0)

(Last Week 26)

The Kings snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over Calgary. Earlier in the week they lost via shutout to both Carolina and Buffalo. This week the Kings are on the road for all four as they play in Winnipeg, St. Louis, Minnesota and Chicago. Drew Doughty leads the Kings blueline with three goals and five points.

26. New York Rangers

Record: 2-4-0 (0-3-0)

(Last Week -15)

The Rangers dropped all three games this week against New Jersey, Washington and Vancouver. They are home for all three this week as Arizona, Buffalo and Boston come to town. Jacob Trouba has a goal and six points in six games as his move from Winnipeg has helped his offensive game.

27. Chicago

Record: 2-3-1 (2-1-0)

The Blackhawks won their first two games of the week (and the season) beating Edmonton and Columbus but fell to Washington Saturday. They are playing four games this week as they are home to Vegas, Philadelphia and Los Angeles and head on the road to play Carolina. Erik Gustafsson leads the Blackhawk blueliners with four assists in six games.

28. New Jersey 

Record: 2-4-2 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -29)

The Devils finally won their first games of the season as they beat the New York Rangers and Vancouver, after losing a couple to Boston and Florida. This week the Devils face Arizona at home in their lone contest. P.K. Subban and Sami Vatanen each have three points to lead the Devils.

29. Dallas

Record: 2-7-1 (1-3-0)

(Last Week -27)

The Stars finally hit the win column again on Saturday as they beat the Flyers but lost the three previous games of the week as Buffalo, Columbus and Pittsburgh were victorious. They are home for all three this week as they face Ottawa, Anaheim and Pittsburgh. Miro Heiskanen has three goals and six points in 10 games this season.

30. Minnesota

Record:2-6-0 (2-2-0)

(Last Week -31)

The Wild won a couple in Eastern Canada as they defeated Ottawa and Montreal. They dropped decisions to Montreal at home and Toronto on the road. They face Edmonton and Los Angeles at home and play Nashville on the road. Ryan Suter and Brad Hunt lead the Wild in points with five apiece, one ahead of four others including Jason Zucker.

31.Ottawa 

Record:1-5-1 (0-2-1)

The Senators lost to Minnesota and Arizona but picked up a point with a shootout loss to Vegas. Ottawa has four games this week as they play in Dallas and then come home to play Detroit, the New York Islanders and San Jose. Thomas Chabot has a goal and three assists to lead the Senators blueline.
