On a per-share basis, the Franklin, Tennessee-based company said it had a loss of 97 cents. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 1 cent per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 11 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 43 cents per share.
The operator of accute care hospitals posted revenue of $3.56 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Nine analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.51 billion.
In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, the company's shares hit $3.28. A year ago, they were trading at $8.46.
