Compact, Mid-Size, or Corvette Z06? Hertz Now Renting Special Edition Vette
It’s likely that the most memorable car Hertz ever made available for the great unwashed to rent was the Shelby GT350-H of 1966. In that era, we described the extra-zoot Mustang as “a real guts sports car-with hair on its chest all the way down to its navel.” Ford, which later owned Hertz from 1987 to 2005, paid tribute to the original 1000 rentable GT350s in 2006–2007 and again in 2016 with the sorta-breathed-on GT-H, celebrating the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the program, respectively. But to celebrate its 100th anniversary as a going concern, Hertz turned to another former owner, General Motors, for a vehicle endowed with hair from its palms to its toes: the 650-hp Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
Similar to the gold-and-black color scheme on previous Hertz-special rental Vettes, the Hertz 100th Anniversary Edition Corvette Z06 features a yellow-and-black paint job, so as to accentuate and reinforce corporate synergies. The interiors are all uniform as well, dressed in black with yellow stitching. Wheels? Black. Brake calipers? Yellow. Might we humbly suggest W.A.S.P. as driving music? There is, after all, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, all the better for listening to Blackie Lawless belt out “Blind in Texas” or “I Wanna Be Somebody.” You could conceivably even wear a circular-saw codpiece. It’s a Corvette. Angelyne drives one! Nobody will look twice! Some people, perhaps most notably Mary Barra, will be pleased by the rental Vette’s 4G LTE connectivity as well as its Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, but we’re guessing that you, dear slavering enthusiast, just want to know if Hertz is offering a manual version.
The answer to that question is a large, furry, and resounding “Nope.” The Hertz Oh-Six is an automatic-only proposition. You do, however, get to gaze upon a “personalized Hertz centennial anniversary plaque that displays the model number of the vehicle.” Wanna rent one? They’re now available to reserve at the following aerodrome rental locations: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco, and Tampa. The price varies by city; in Las Vegas, it’s $249 a day, with taxes and fees bringing that to $335. For that, you get to drive it up to 75 miles.
