Companies to Watch: Equifax settles, CBS goes dark on AT&T, Vail buying Peak in ski deal

Here are some of the companies Yahoo Finance is watching today.

Equifax (EFX) is set to pay upward of $575 million to settle state and federal investigations into a massive data breach. That includes more than $225 million in fines, and setting up a $300 million fund for customers. The 2017 breach exposed the personal information of some 143 million Americans. This is the largest settlement ever for a data breach.

CBS (CBS) fans are in an uproar after the channel went dark in 17 markets including New York, San Francisco and Atlanta. That’s because the network and AT&T (T) couldn't come to an agreement on a new carriage contract. The blackout affects 6.6 million viewers, and CBS warns the dispute could last a while. The programming blackout comes as a new football season is about to get underway and the new fall show lineup is on the horizon.

Vail Resorts (MTN) is set to acquire Peak Resorts (SKIS) for some $264 million, or $11 a share. The deal will add 17 resorts to the ski empire, including destinations like Hunter Mountain in New York and Mount Snow in Vermont. Peak Resorts' shareholders will have to sign off to make it official.

Johnson and Johnson (JNJ) is facing a key hearing today in its courtroom battle over the safety of its baby powder. A federal judge in New Jersey will hear scientific evidence that could decide whether to let some 12,000 claims go to trial. J&J insists its talc products are safe and don't cause cancer.

Disney (DIS) is bringing down the hammer after it announced its Marvel line up for the box office in 2020 and 2021 at Comic Con over the weekend. The studio revealed a slate of interconnected movies and shows for its new streaming service — Disney+ — including “Thor: Love and Thunder.” In that, Natalie Portman will return to the franchise as a female version of the god of thunder. Disney also unveiled the star studded "The Eternals" with Angelina Jolie, and it will add an Asian superhero for the film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
