The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. For example, the CompX International Inc. (NYSEMKT:CIX) share price is up 43% in the last five years, slightly above the market return. Zooming in, the stock is up a respectable 6.0% in the last year.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, CompX International managed to grow its earnings per share at 16% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 7.4% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of CompX International, it has a TSR of 55% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that CompX International shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 7.6% over one year. That's including the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 9.2% a year, is even better. Before forming an opinion on CompX International you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
