Court sides with Shell on spill

A Dutch court ruled that a Royal Dutch Shell (RDS-A) subsidiary is responsible for a pipeline leak that poisoned farmland in Nigeria. But it rejected most of the case brought by Nigerian farmers and the environmental pressure group Friends of the Earth against Shell, saying the spill was caused by saboteurs, not Shell. However, the judges in one case ordered subsidiary Shell Nigeria to compensate a farmer, saying the oil major made it too easy for saboteurs to open an oil well head that leaked onto his land. Shares fell 0.2% to 2,305.50.
