The average annual percentage rate, or APR, for variable-rate credit cards rose 4 basis points to 15.16 percent from 15.12 percent, according to Bankrate's latest survey of interest rates. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point. The APR for fixed-rate cards stayed steady at 13.02 percent.
The percentage of past-due credit card accounts fell to an 18-year low in the final three months of 2012, according to the American Bankers Association. The group said Tuesday that credit card delinquencies -- measured as 30 days or more overdue -- declined to 2.47 percent in the fourth quarter from 2.75 percent in the third quarter. That marked the lowest level since the third quarter of 1994 and remains well-below the 15-year average of 3.87 percent.
