CSP's (NASDAQ:CSPI) investors will be pleased with their impressive 104% return over the last year

In this article:

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the CSP Inc. (NASDAQ:CSPI) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 102%. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 41% gain in the last three months. Also impressive, the stock is up 60% over three years, making long term shareholders happy, too.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year CSP grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.

When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements).

We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 0.8% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. However the year on year revenue growth of 20% would help. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that CSP shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 104% over one year. And that does include the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 8%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand CSP better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that CSP is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those doesn't sit too well with us...
