Any parent would be rightfully peeved if they received a letter from their child’s school threatening to fine them for compromising their kid’s education by pulling them out of school for a week. But when one UK dad received such a letter from his son’s school and found it was filled with egregious typos and embarrassing grammatical errors, he decided to take on the role of teacher by grading the poorly written letter with a bright red pen and posting it on Facebook.
When Daniel Moore, 31, took his five-year-old son Charlie out of school for five days so the family could go on vacation to Majorca, he knew that there would be a €60 ($68.35) fine. But, what literally appalled Moore were the rather casual misspellings, among several others, of simple words like guilty and notice, which the letter carelessly put down as “guitly” and “notie.”
“I saw a couple of spelling errors as soon as I opened the letter but as I read on more mistakes appeared,” Moore told Devon Live. “At first I thought it was quite funny but when you place it into the context that these people are responsible for the future of children’s education it is concerning.”
Today we received our fines for taking Charlie on holiday. ????I’m not going to pretend I’m a Spelling guru or a typing…
Since Moore posted the letter, it’s been shared and commented on thousands of times, even prompting a response from a local county spokesperson who blamed the typos on a new IT printing system before assuring Moore that the error “won’t be repeated.”
That didn’t stop Moore from giving them a D- for the letter, along with a note saying “Must try harder.”
“I’ve said that I’ll pay the £60 fine but I just wanted to make sure people could see how sloppy the letter was,” Moore said. “Since putting it on Facebook it’s had an amazing amount of reaction, I think there’s a lot of support out there for parents in my position.”
