Danny Rose predicts quiet January transfer window for Tottenham while praising ‘amazing’ Mauricio Pochettino
Danny Rose does not expect Tottenham Hotspur to strengthen their squad in January, but added that Mauricio Pochettino’s achievements with lesser resources than his Premier League rivals “speaks volumes” about his quality.
Tottenham became the first team in Premier League history to go through an entire summer transfer window without signing a single player prior to this season but sit third in the table after 16 matches, six points behind leaders Liverpool.
They also secured a place in the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday with a spirited 1-1 draw against a depleted Barcelona team, after which Pochettino credited his players’ strength of belief for keeping their European dreams alive against the Spanish league leaders.
Tottenham’s impressive performance at the Nou Camp also sparked fresh reports that Real Madrid will seek to appoint Pochettino as their new manager next summer, and Rose believes it is inevitable that the Argentine will draw admiring glances for his work.
“It’s no secret all the teams have spent a lot more than what we have,” Rose said. “The manager did not make any signings in the summer and he is probably not going to make any signings in January.
“For him to do what he has done and what he is doing now speaks volumes of him. It’s no coincidence big teams are being linked with him. We hope he stays for a really long time.”
Manchester United have also been persistently linked with a move to replace the embattled Jose Mourinho with Pochettino – who signed a new contract committing himself to Tottenham until June 2023 in May – at the end of the season.
“It’s no coincidence every day you read Real Madrid want him or United want him,” Rose added. “It’s exactly what he deserves. What he has done here in the last four or five years has been amazing, not only for myself but the club.
“He has transformed how others think of us outside the club and he has transformed how we think of ourselves and how we approach big games. The belief he gives everybody is just amazing.”
Tottenham return to Premier League action on Saturday when they face struggling Burnley at Wembley.
