Former Nebraska center and Rimington Trophy namesake Dave Rimington is Nebraska’s interim replacement for the fired Shawn Eichorst.

“I am humbled and grateful to accept this responsibility,” Rimington said in a Nebraska statement. “I look forward to working with the coaches, staff and student-athletes at Nebraska, which is a truly special place that has had a profound impact on my life and the lives of countless others.”

Rimington played center at Nebraska from 1979-82 and is the only player to win the Outland Trophy — given to the best offensive lineman in the country — in back-to-back seasons. The Rimington Trophy, given to the best center in the country, was established in 2000.

Nebraska fired Eichorst last week after the football team lost to Northern Illinois and fell to 1-2. A win vs. Rutgers on Saturday brought Rutgers back to .500.

The school introduced Rimington in a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
