It’s got to be pretty weird to grow up with a famous parent. Seeing their faces plastered all over the television and in article headlines must be jarring, if not totally invasive. But Dax Shepard found a way to avoid this potential weirdness for his kids: they simply don’t know he’s famous.
On Monday night’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Shepard revealed that his four- and 6-year-old daughters, Delta and Lincoln, were shocked to learn about their dad’s fame. The 44-year-old actor and host told Colbert that his kids have visited him and his wife, actress Kristen Bell, on set, as well as seen billboards of them.
But apparently, they didn’t understand the full extent of the situation until very recently. When his daughter asked why people tune into Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert, he told her that it’s because he’s famous.
Her reply is nothing short of adorable: “You’re famous?! Does mom know?” Shepard then broke the news that their mother is even more famous than him. “She understands how we’re making money, but this word ‘famous’ was its own thing,” Shepard explains to Colbert.
Aside from being totally charming, the anecdote proves that Shepard and Bell go to great lengths to make things “normal” for their daughters, which is pretty darn refreshing for celebrity parents. It’s similar to singer Kelly Clarkson, who recently revealed that her kids have no clue that their mom is one of the biggest superstars in the world, which made Clarkson extremely happy.
