Deadpool assembles X-Force against Josh Brolin's baddie (no, not Thanos) in final 'Deadpool 2' trailer

It has been less than a month since Deadpool 2 dropped its last trailer — and, in the process, gave us some actual hints about its story. Nonetheless, Ryan Reynolds’s Merc With a Mouth is nothing if not the king of self-promotion (see, recently, his cancer PSA campaign and his introductory first look at Josh Brolin’s Cable and his Bob Ross-inspired tease). And thus with the film’s May debut right around the corner, the highly anticipated R-rated sequel has presented fans with a final full-length promo that lets everyone know what the Marvel antihero will be up to in his second big-screen go-round — and, specifically, why he’s assembling his own super-duper-BLEEPING-group.

In case anyone was worried that Deadpool 2 wouldn’t be as sharply snarky and self-referential as before, the clip above will definitely put those concerns to rest because it delivers some choice jabs at Fox’s treatment of Wolverine, Brolin’s other Marvel baddie turn this summer (as Avengers: Infinity War’s Thanos) and the darkness of the DC superhero movie universe. It’s now clear that Deadpool will be forming X-Force in order to combat Cable, who’s in search of a young boy (Hunt for the Wilderpeople’s Julian Dennison). And though we get an extended look at some of his new mutant cohorts — including Zazie Beetz’s Domino, whose superpower is luck, as well as another unlikely recruit with little in the way of practical skills — the real humor once again comes from Deadpool himself, who can’t help but treat his life-or-death circumstances as an extended joke. Now if only he’d held his ground and kept the project’s name as “Untitled Deadpool Sequel”…

Directed by Atomic Blonde’s David Leitch and co-starring Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, Jack Kesy, and Stefan Kapičić, Deadpool 2 arrives in theaters on May 19. And despite this being the film’s “final” trailer, something tells us that Reynolds will find a way to debut a few more tongue-in-cheek promos before that premiere.
