Deloitte's Singaporean Law Practice Adds Director

Big Four accounting firm Deloitte's affiliated Singaporean law practice, Sabara Law, has hired a director.

David Teo joins from local firm Donaldson & Burkinshaw, where he was a corporate partner, focusing on mergers and acquisitions. Teo also advises high-net-worth individuals, private banks and trustee companies on Singapore tax and trust matters.

Before joining Donaldson & Burkinshaw in 2014, Teo was a director at Duane Morris & Selvam—the Philadelphia-based firm's Singaporean joint venture—since 2011. Previously, he practiced at leading Singaporean firm Allen & Gledhill and started his career at Donaldson & Burkinshaw in 2002.

Sabara Law was launched in November 2018 by former Allen & Overy tax counsel Lian Chuan Yeoh, who serves as managing director of the firm. The firm has joined Deloitte's global legal network. Yeoh told The Asian Lawyer in November that the firm will initially have a team of up to four lawyers, including two directors, focusing on work adjacent to Deloitte's services, which include tax, financial regulation and data protection.

Deloitte also launched a foreign law offering in the city-state last year, led by Rashed Idrees, a former partner with Southeast Asian law firm DFDL, where he oversaw practices in several Southeast Asian countries.

Rival Big Four accounting firm PwC also recently expanded its Singaporean law practice, Eng and Co., recruiting Lynn Ariele Soh, a former vice president of legal at Singapore-based medical service provider Fullerton Healthcare Corp., as a corporate partner in October last year.

Both PwC and EY launched new local law practices in Singapore in 2018. KPMG is the only Big Four firm that does not have any legal offering in Singapore and currently has no plans to launch a law firm in the city-state, citing lack of on-the-ground support from the auditor's Singapore entity.
