Diahann Carroll’s Furniture, Jewelry, Clothing, and Memorabilia to Be Sold

The late American icon Diahann Carroll’s personal effects will be up for sale next month, giving fans of the multi-hyphenate a chance to own a part of her storied Hollywood legacy. According to a release, auction house Bonhams will be presenting property from Carroll’s estate on March 10, showcasing everything from the singer-actor-model-activist’s photos to her clothing, shoes, handbags, and jewelry. Items from Carroll’s home, including a baby grand Steinway piano, will also be up for sale.

“My mother was a fascinating, complicated, beautiful, and talented woman who lived life to the fullest,” Carroll’s daughter, Suzanne Kay, said in a release about the sale. “As she traveled the world, she collected art, furniture, and clothes that she loved and she firmly believed she deserved to have the best. She was a woman who never let anyone else define her.” Other items of note include a 19th-century ruby and diamond brooch worth an estimated $10,000 to $12,000 and a vintage gold Cancer zodiac medallion from Tiffany & Co. believed to be worth between $5,000 and $7,000. Memorabilia from Carroll’s long and complex career will also be up for sale, including a working script for the pilot episode of her show Julia, as well as a photo album from her time on the 1962 Broadway play No Strings.

Though Carroll wore many metaphorical hats over the years, she is perhaps best known for her role as Clara in the film version of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, or for her titular role on Julia, which made her the first African American actress to star in her own TV series. She was a talk show favorite, chatting with hosts ranging from Johnny Carson to Ed Sullivan to Judy Garland, and she played diva Dominique Deveraux on the popular soap opera Dynasty in the ’80s. She would continue her career in television well into the early aughts as Jane Burke, the overbearing mother of Dr. Preston Burke, on Grey’s Anatomy. She was a founding member of the Celebrity Action Council, which served the women’s outreach of the Los Angeles Mission. She died in October of last year at the age of 84.
