Did BBA Aviation plc (LON:BBA) Insiders Buy Up More Shares?

We’ve lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in BBA Aviation plc (LON:BBA).

What Is Insider Selling?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock on the market. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that ‘insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.’

BBA Aviation Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Group Chief Executive & Director Mark Johnstone made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£207k worth of shares at a price of UK£3.06 each. That means that even when the share price was higher, an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. That purchase may suggest an expectation of positive returns over the long term. Mark Johnstone was the only individual insider to buy over the year.

Insider Ownership of BBA Aviation

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it’s a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Our data suggests BBA Aviation insiders own 0.05% of the company, worth about UK£1.0m. I generally like to see higher levels of ownership.

So What Do The BBA Aviation Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn’t really mean much that no insider has traded BBA Aviation shares in the last quarter. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. We’d like to see bigger individual holdings. However, we don’t see anything to make us think BBA Aviation insiders are doubting the company.
