Did Intra Energy Corporation Limited (ASX:IEC) Insiders Buy Up More Shares?

Miguel Kauffman

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Intra Energy Corporation Limited (ASX:IEC).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We don’t think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, ‘insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.’

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it’s a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It’s great to see that Intra Energy insiders own 57% of the company, worth about AU$2.2m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Intra Energy Tell Us?

It’s certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don’t feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Once you factor in the high insider ownership, it certainly seems like insiders are positive about Intra Energy. Nice! Along with insider transactions, I recommend checking if Intra Energy is growing revenue. This free chart of historic revenue and earnings should make that easy.
