Did You Manage To Avoid Foundation Building Materials's (NYSE:FBM) 13% Share Price Drop?

It is doubtless a positive to see that the Foundation Building Materials, Inc. (NYSE:FBM) share price has gained some 34% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been less than pleasing. In fact the stock is down 13% in the last year, well below the market return.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Foundation Building Materials fell to a loss making position during the year. Buyers no doubt think it's a temporary situation, but those with a nose for quality have low tolerance for losses. However, there may be an opportunity for investors if the company can recover.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

Given that the market gained 9.1% in the last year, Foundation Building Materials shareholders might be miffed that they lost 13%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. Putting aside the last twelve months, it's good to see the share price has rebounded by 34%, in the last ninety days. Let's just hope this isn't the widely-feared 'dead cat bounce' (which would indicate further declines to come). Shareholders might want to examine this detailed historical graph of past earnings, revenue and cash flow.
