Did You Miss China Evergrande Group's (HKG:3333) Whopping 523% Share Price Gain?

Simply Wall St

While China Evergrande Group (HKG:3333) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 15% in the last quarter. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. In that time, the share price has soared some 523% higher! Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term.

Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, China Evergrande Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 13% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 44% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered China Evergrande Group's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. China Evergrande Group's TSR of 704% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 2.3% in the last year, China Evergrande Group shareholders lost 4.6%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 52%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
